Under prohibition, Appalachian farmers, trying to provide for their families, instantly became criminals.  The close-knit mountain community reacted to the revenuers, who were tearing apart their way of life, by protecting each other and helping their neighbors hide.  And while alcohol production was prohibited, these farmers used their traditional recipes to provide moonshine to the country, becoming prosperous businessmen.
